Advisors: Ralph A. Bradshaw, Ph. D.

Chair of Scientific Advisory Board

Dr. Ralph Bradshaw received his B.A. degree in Chemistry from Colby College, Waterville, Maine in 1962, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina in 1966. He performed postdoctoral research in the Department Of Biochemistry, University of Washington, Seattle. In 1969, Dr. Bradshaw was recruited to the Department of Biological Chemistry at the Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, where he spent 14 years, rising to the rank of full professor in 1974. In 1982, he took the position of Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine, a position he occupied for 10 years. He currently is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of California, Irvine

Dr. Bradshaw's scientific career spans over 35 years and he is recognized as one of the world's foremost experts on protein biochemistry. In almost 300 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals Dr. Bradshaw has made important and significant contributions to our knowledge of the structure and function of proteins, and in particular, polypeptide growth factors. His most noted work has been with nerve growth factor and fibroblast growth factor, where his laboratory contributed seminal findings on the structure and mechanism of action of these polypeptides. He has utilized both molecular biology and protein chemistry approaches to dissect the manner in which these growth factors transduce their biological signals through the cell. This highly cited work has won numerous scientific awards and has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for close to 30 years.

Dr. Bradshaw was the first president and founding father of the Protein Society, an organization of several thousand scientists dedicated to the study and analysis of proteins. He has been on the editorial boards of over 15 journals in the fields of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology, including editor-in-chief of Trends in Biochemical Sciences (TIBS) and an Associate Editor for 10 years for the Journal of Biological Chemistry. A highlight of Dr. Bradshaw's career was his election in 1995 to be president of FASEB, the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, one of the largest and most visible scientific societies in the United States, with over 10,000 scientific members. Dr. Bradshaw has also held leadership positions in numerous other scientific societies including the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists, American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, and the American Peptide Society. He has organized and run over 30 scientific conferences in the fields of protein chemistry, endocrinology and growth factor research, including chairing the Executive Committee of the Keystone Symposia Scientific Advisory Board.

Dr. Bradshaw has had a number of corporate affiliations, which have utilized his expertise as a growth factor biochemist. He was a founder and on the board of directors of Cortex Pharmaceuticals, a neuropharmaceutical company located in Irvine, CA. In addition, Dr. Bradshaw has had a long association with AMGEN Corp., Thousand Oaks, CA and Baxter-Hyland, Duarte, CA, acting as a consultant for these firms.
