Human Growth Hormone

Human Growth Hormone (hGH) is produced in the pituitary gland. hGH was first isolated in 1956 and its structure was identified in 1972. Prior to 1985, hGH was derived from human cadavers; however, the Public Health Service halted the use of human derived hGH due to contamination of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease-causing agent, which can result in a fatal, degenerative neurological disease if contracted. Recombinant hGH contains the identical 191 amino acid sequence as that of pituitary-derived human growth hormone. The protein is synthesized by a specific laboratory strain of E. coli utilizing plasmid methodologies. Biological potency is determined using a cell proliferation bioassay. Brands of hGH include: Nutropin® and Protropin® (Genentech), Genotropin® (Pharmacia & Upjohn), Humatrope® (Lilly), and Norditropin® (Novo/Nordisk). FDA approved indications including the treatment of short stature in children, AIDS wasting, and growth hormone deficiency in adults.

Phage’s Human Growth Hormone (Syntropin)

Phage’s growth hormone product, Syntropin™, is identical to Genentech’s, Protropin®. Protropin® was the first recombinant DNA product approved by the U.S. FDA, and the patent on its sequence has expired.

The following Figure displays the human growth hormone manufactured by the Phage Process.
